Secondary Education (11 to 16 years old)
This stage covers two cycles:
Key Stage 3: Year 7 to Year 9 (11 to 14 years old)
Key Stage 4: Year 10 and Year 11 (14 to 16 years old)
Secondary in BSV
Once the students reach Year 7, they are taught by specialised teachers in each one of the subjects. A tutor is responsible for the academic progress and personal development of the students in their group.
All subjects are taught in English (except for the Spanish studies) and they also continue learning French as a second foreign language which they began studying in Year 5 and Year 6. In Secondary, they also have the possibility to study a third language choosing between German and Chinese.
In the last cycle of this stage, which includes Year 10 and Year 11, students are prepared to take the official IGCSE examinations. Optional subjects are introduced from which they must choose based on their preferences and skills.
Key Stage 3: Year 7 to Year 9
The subjects taught in this cycle, which are the same for all the students, are as follows:
- English
- Mathematics
- Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology)
- Geography
- History
- French
- German or Mandarin Chinese
- I.T.
- P.E.
- Art and Design
- Music
- Personal, Social, Health & Economic Education
The following subjects are also offered as part of the Spanish studies*:
- Spanish Language
- Valenciano
- Social and Natural Science (Year 7)
- Spanish Culture (Year 8 & Year 9)
*non-Spanish speaking students take Spanish language classes only and follow a specific learning programme for foreign students.
Key Stage 4: Year 10 & Year 11
This is the final stage of compulsory education in which students are prepared to take the official IGCSE examinations (International General Certificate of Secondary Education). These official exams are taken at the end of Year 11.
The subjects that students must take are divided into common and optional studies from which they must choose a total of two and will be studied throughout Year 10 and Year 11.
Students must pass at least five IGCSE subjects (with a C or above) in order to go on to 6th Form.
Regarding the Spanish studies, these include Spanish language, Spanish culture and valenciano. They are necessary in order to obtain the Spanish ESO credential (título de Educación Secundaria Obligatoria).
Spanish students study First Language Spanish whilst foreign students study Spanish as a Foreign Language. English speaking students are able to study First Language English, whilst other students take English as a Second Language.
