IT and New Technologies
Information and Communications Technology (ICT) applied to education are of great importance in our educational project and our school’s syllabus. In fact, the new British National Curriculum includes this subject from the first year of primary school (Year 1), continuing studies, training and especially practical lessons in this subject until the end of Higher Secondary Education.
Nowadays it is difficult to imagine education not including Information and Communications Technology and the use of mobile devices as tools to enrich all aspects of the curriculum. We are witnessing a true revolution in this sense. At BSV we endeavour to include them in our daily work with different objectives:
As a teaching resource to aid learning of different aspects of the syllabus.
As a way of providing our pupils with an engaging learning experience by using cutting-edge technology.
As a work tool for both pupils and staff.
As a two-way communication and information channel for the school and parents.
So that our primary and secondary school pupils are able to learn and train with new technologies, all classrooms are equipped with computers with teaching resources adapted to each level and age group. We also have two fixed and three mobile IT classrooms, the latter are equipped with both Netbooks and iPads. All classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards and cable or wifi Internet/Intranet access giving coverage to the whole of the school grounds.
The British Education System cannot envision the teaching of science over the different subjects and stages – Biology, Chemistry and Physics – without an experimental element and therefore without the use of science labs for practical lab work.
The school currently has two science labs for Chemistry, Physics and Biology. The labs feature separate areas for Physics, Chemistry and Biology – Natural Sciences. Both labs share a preparation room and specific storage area for chemical and reactive substances. The labs are fitted and equipped with all the technical resources necessary as well as interactive whiteboards and network connection to the school’s intranet and the Internet.
Mobile devices (Tablets/iPads) are a very interesting resource for learning sciences since different, carefully chosen Apps labs are able to complement lab work, particularly in the case of Biology and Chemistry.
All of our secondary school pupils take the three science subjects (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) up to Year 9 – Key Stage 3 (14 years old), when they are required to sit the Science Cambridge Checkpoint exams. In Key Stage 4 (Year 10 and Year 11) all pupils take Dual Award Science up to IGCSE level.
Over the Higher Secondary Education stage (Year 12 & Year 13), British School of Valencia offers its pupils the chance to finish their science studies, choosing Physics, Chemistry or Biology. Specially recommended for those pupils who wish to go on to study scientific, technical or healthcare higher education qualifications. The official exams corresponding to the science subjects for Key Stage 4 (Year 10 and Year 11) and 6th Form (Higher Secondary Education) include a practical assessment, testament to the importance placed on the experimentation component of these subjects in our educational project.
Art and Design
The Art and Design syllabus is an integral part of the National Curriculum and is taken by pupils from Foundation Stage to Key Stage 3. Additionally, it is offered as an optional subject for the IGCSE and GCE levels (A Levels).
This teaching ethos aims to stimulate the creative skills of all pupils regardless of inherent talents, since all children have the potential to express themselves creatively. The drawing process is an integral part of all projects and pupils are encouraged to work using varied techniques such as sculpture, textiles, painting, multimedia and ICT.
Through creative exploration, pupils are able to hone motor skills and better organise their ideas. Pupils also conduct extensive research into artistic works, designers and architects to inspire and support their own work. We frequently organise cultural outings to museums and exhibitions related to the varied artistic disciplines being studied. Furthermore, KS4 pupils organise an annual cultural trip to a European city to support the course work undertaken over the year in Art and Design.
