Physical education is given to all students at the school, following the requirements specified in the British National Curriculum. The primary objectives that we have set are helping the students develop their abilities and skills in relation to motion and stimulating their knowledge of themselves and of others. Our goal is that as the students progress through school they understand the importance of physical education as a means of health, balanced personal development, as well as to develop their physical and social skills through participation in a wide variety of sport activities.
Foundation Levels
We run a safe programme of physical activities for children that allows them to explore their physical potential. By the time they reach Year 1, students will be able to move with confidence and imagination, increasing their control and co-ordination. At this stage, must of the work is done at individual level, with the introduction of some group and competitive activities.
Key Stage I
There are three facets at the core of this area at this stage: games, gymnastics and dance. The games help students develop general skills related to motion. In gymnastics, students learn to use the equipment safely, developing specific movements in each case. Dance allows students to explore ways of moving with the music, noting changes in forms and speed. Here students work in pairs and they understand the need to co-operate with others.
Key Stage 2
At this stage, developing skills and understanding motion through progressive changes continue to be very important. Specifically, small-scale games are introduced, teaching the appropriate technical dexterity for each of them. In dance and gymnastics, students improve their understanding and use of space and rhythm in a creative environment.
Key Stage 3, 4 & 5
The school strives to develop the skills of the students and knowledge of and participation in games, gymnastics, dance and athletics. Students work in groups and on their own. The goal is that all students enjoy physical activity, and that they understand the importance of exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle.
